What is SEO?

Around 54,000 Google Searches happen every second. Whenever you search for something on the web, the Search engine will give you a list of articles related to that particular term. The search engine lists these relevant pages after knowing which websites rank better than the others. This ranking of websites happens due to a very powerful web marketing method called Search Engine Optimization (SEO).
SEO is a procedure which allows search engines to find and rank the website higher than the trillions of websites in response to a search query. SEO thus helps in getting traffic from search engines.
“The three essential elements of an effective SEO are effective communication, useful information and high-quality backlinks.” – SEO Refugee
Things SEO can and can’t do –
Tasks Performed by SEO | Tasks Not Performed by SEO |
Enhance the website’s search engine friendliness. | Prepare the website to be irresistible to search engines so that it will rank for any desired keyword. |
Enhance the website’s ranking for a well-researched group of keywords over a duration of months or years. | Upgrade the website rankings for the most looked after keywords within a few weeks. |
It will follow a well planned and executed Search Engine optimization campaign, which can cost more than the estimate. | Bring an improvement in the site’s rankings using unexceptional services like free directory submissions and “article writing”, the worst part being: the money spent on all this will be lesser than a pack of cookies! |
Leeway all the well written and the other unflawed entertaining or interesting content to engage a successful link building campaign which will result in higher rankings. | Leeway undistinguished content that your relative had copied from Wikipedia articles. |
Refine the content by including a specific number of the desired keywords into it (please don’t forcefully stuff the article) and if possible, create new text and internally each other to emphasize on importance of the used keywords for the search engines. | Refine the site’s content by using an unseen keyword density which is known only by SEO and thus push the site higher in the search engine result pages for the targeted keywords. |
There are mainly two types of SEO:
White Hat SEO | Black Hat SEO | |
Definition | As per Webopedia.com,
White Hat SEO refers to the usage of optimization strategies, techniques and tactics that focus on a human audience opposed to search engines and completely follows search engine rules and policies. | As per Webopedia.com,
Black Hat SEO refers to the use of aggressive SEO strategies, techniques and tactics that focus only on search engines and not a human audience, and usually does not obey search engines guidelines. |
Value | Pretty High | Very Low (The people in charge of the cleaning the Search Engine result page spam will know the best!) |
Techniques | The site can get banned for not engaging in White Hat SEO techniques. Link acquisition campaigns with high quality content, manual research and outreach, amazingly accurate content development. | Cloaking, hidden texts and links and link spam are some Black Hat techniques. |
What to Expect | Ever growing and ever lasting effects | Short lasting and unpredictable results |
For a WordPress blog, Web page title (Article or Post Title in most cases), length and importance of the content, the URL description and other factors affect SEO.
